Lead Like An Aviator Flies An Airplane

To have success as a leader, you must be adept at recognizing when these three forces, (Energy, Motivation, & Environment), are not working to your advantage. These are the same forces that an aviator manipulates to fly, maneuver, and land an aircraft. They are part of a tool kit that you, as a leader, can use to identify when these forces are impeding your efforts for more success in your organization. Over the course of my career, I have seen many similarities between organizational leadership and aviation. I see solopreneurs as fighter jet pilots because they are one-person operations charged with doing everything themselves. The level of inputs and stimulus can be overwhelming, so they must become masters of prioritization. Small business leaders are more like leer jet pilots; there can be more than one person in the flight station, but they are only responsible for a limited number of people due to the size of their aircraft. As small businesses grow into large coporations, they require an aircrew with specialized talents to achieve their multi-faceted missions and they are responsible for many more lives. Regardless of the organization's size, effectively leading an organization requires the master of a skillset that is akin to flying an airplane. Understanding and identifying the forces that are impacting your planned route, a.k.a. exhibiting situational awareness, and quickly reacting to maneuver your organization through those forces to reach your objective is what every successful leader accomplishes time and time again.
